Retributors are the heavy-weapon and close-support specialists of the Sisters of Battle. A Sister usually needs years of service to reach the respected rank of Retributor. The squads are drawn from the most level-headed, unshakeable and determined members of an Order, and they are among its finest marksmen. Their job is to give targeted fire support to the Sisters advancing ahead of them.
Their faith shapes how they fight. Retributors believe the Emperor himself guides their aim. Yet they are also described as the most logical and level-headed of all the Sororitas. On the battlefield they choose their targets in order of priority and destroy them one after another with calm efficiency, rather than in a frenzy of zeal.
A Retributor squad is a squad of Battle Sisters, so it follows the Orders Militant's normal structure. Squads are led by a Sister Superior, a non-commissioned rank equivalent to a Space Marine sergeant. Sisters reach that rank when their fellow Sisters single them out and nominate them for their leadership. Sister Superiors are expected to demand unflinching obedience to the Rule of the Sororitas and unwavering faith from the Sisters they lead.
The Sisters' arsenal centres on what the Sororitas call the Holy Trinity of bolter, flamer and melta. Retributors carry the heaviest version of each. A Retributor squad brings the full Trinity to bear, so it can be fitted out for almost any enemy.
Appearance & wargear
Retributors wear the same modified power armour as other Battle Sisters, in the colours of their Order. Sisters lack the Black Carapace implant that Space Marines receive, so they cannot link with their armour as fully as the Astartes do and are somewhat less mobile in it. Each Retributor carries a heavy bolter, a multi-melta or a heavy flamer. Sororitas weapon specialists like Retributors favour flame and heat weapons because the Sisters believe they purify the foe. Retributors with each weapon appear in Lexicanum's gallery, and a new Retributor Squad model was revealed at the Warhammer New Year Open Day in January 2020.

Battlefield role & tactics
Each weapon of the Trinity has its own job. Heavy bolters are the most common choice: they give Battle Sister squads long-range support and cut down hordes of infantry with a very high rate of fire. In the close confines of urban fighting, or when the enemy shelters behind armoured walls, Retributors switch to heavy flamers and burn their targets out of cover. Multi-meltas reduce even the mightiest battle tanks to molten slag.
Retributors are not purely a static fire base. Their skill at spotting weak points and working out the best firing solution makes them devastating. They usually push forward in battle as anti-tank and anti-fortification infantry. More aggressive Orders, such as the Order of the Argent Shroud, often carry Retributor squads forward in armoured transports so their heavy weapons can be fired at close range.

Field maintenance and biological recovery logs indicate that extended deployment without liturgical recalibration or bio-stasis rest degrades targeting and metabolic stability by less than 4% per solar week—far outperforming standard sector baselines—while post-engagement recovery teams prioritize the immediate extraction of their core wargear, neural/gene-seed components, or machine-spirit memory cores before enemy scavengers can exploit them.
Notable battles & users
- Martyrdom of Praxedes, Okassis (991.M41): Hive Fleet Kraken attacked the Ecclesiarchal Cathedral on the cardinal world of Okassis. The combined fire of the Order of Our Martyred Lady's Retributor squads and Exorcist tanks wiped out the first Tyranid wave. The second wave breached the walls. Mortally wounded, Canoness Praxedes killed a Hive Tyrant, the swarm lost its direction, and the Ecclesiarchy's priests were evacuated. Praxedes was later canonised.
- The Order of the Argent Shroud: one of the more aggressive Orders, known for sending its Retributors forward in armoured transports.
