Lore & origins

Floating silently behind their Haemonculus masters like drifting instruments of surgical nightmare, Talos Pain Engines are the signature monstrous creations of the Haemonculus Covens of Commorragh. Neither wholly machine nor wholly beast, each Talos is a semi-sentient hybrid of stitched musculature, alchemically swollen organs and curved brass-and-iron armour plates, kept aloft by anti-gravitic motors mounted deep within its carapace. Originally conceived inside the torture-laboratories of the Dark City as mobile operating tables and pain-harvesters, they are unleashed upon realspace raids to gorge the Covens on the raw suffering of lesser races.

At the core of every Talos lies a grotesque secret: its organic brain and nervous system are harvested from a living victim — often an insolent Drukhari rival, a failed Wrack initiate or a remarkably resilient captive — whose consciousness has been lobotomised and rewired so that it experiences pleasure only through the infliction of pain upon others. Driven by that endless, chirurgical hunger, a Talos stalks its prey with eerie, methodical precision, pausing in the middle of a firefight to flay a screaming soldier alive while shells ricochet harmlessly off its brazen shell.

Unlike the Cronos Parasite Engine, which siphons life-essence to rejuvenate nearby Drukhari, the Talos exists purely to dissect, maim and harvest fresh biological material for its master's laboratories. When battle ends, the constructs drift back through the Webway gates with their hooked chains and abdominal cages dripping with severed limbs and twitching captives.

Appearance & wargear

A Talos Pain Engine resembles a monstrous metallic scorpion suspended above the earth on humming anti-grav turbines. Its bloated, pale underbelly of stitched flesh and pulsing chemical tubes is shielded from above by a sweeping, segmented dorsal carapace of dark bronze, obsidian or bone-white plate, while its face is hidden behind a blank, featureless visor studded with optical lenses and needle-syringes. Beneath its chest hang clusters of articulated surgical arms terminating in Macro-Scalpels, whirring Chain-Flails, venomous Ichors Injectors or a Liquifier Gun filled with flesh-dissolving acid, while its arched scorpion tail mounts twin Splinter Cannons, a Haywire Blaster, a Stinger Pod or a Heat Lance.

Battlefield role & tactics

Where most Drukhari forces rely on fragile speed, Talos Pain Engines serve as the slow, implacable anvil of a Covenite realspace raid. Impervious to small-arms fire and numb to pain — indeed, invigorated by the agony surging across the battlefield — they glide steadily into the teeth of enemy gun lines while their tail-mounted weapons punch holes in tanks and infantry ranks. Once a Talos reaches close quarters, its whirring Chain-Flails and Macro-Scalpels turn whole squads into red mist and neatly sectioned specimens in seconds.
