Lore & history

Whereas Craftworld Aeldari seek to end their enemies' lives with clean, surgical swiftness, their dark cousins in Commorragh design every weapon to prolong suffering and extract the richest possible banquet of pain. The Splinter Rifle—the ubiquitous longarm of Drukhari Kabalite Warriors across every raiding realspace flotilla—is the quintessential instrument of that sadistic philosophy. Sleek, recurved and bristling with wicked flensing-hooks and bayonet-barbs, it fires volleys of microscopic crystalline shards impregnated with the most virulent neurotoxins brewed in the laboratories of the Dark City.

A warrior struck by a burst from a Splinter Rifle rarely dies from the physical puncture alone. Even a grazing scratch that barely penetrates a gap in carapace or ceramite armour introduces a designer venom that sets every nerve ending in the victim's body ablaze with white-hot fire. Within seconds, grown Space Marines and Ork Nobz are reduced to convulsing wrecks as their own muscles tear their bones apart from within, feeding the psychic thirst of the watching Kabalites.

Within the labyrinthine sub-realms of Commorragh, rival Kabals employ master Poisoners and Haemonculus alchemists to brew proprietary strains of splinter-venom tailored to their prey—from coagulants that turn an Ork's fungal blood into solid glass to hyper-stimulants that force a Space Marine's twin hearts to beat until they burst inside his ribcage.

Design, mechanism & battlefield effect

Rather than using a wraithbone gravitic core like Craftworld shuriken weapons, a Drukhari Splinter Rifle houses a translucent reservoir of solidified, hyper-toxic crystal suspended above a magno-electric impulse chamber. When the trigger is depressed, an electromagnetic striker shatters the tip of the toxin-crystal into a cloud of needle-sharp splinters and propels them down the barrel at supersonic speed.

To ensure that the Kabalite Warrior can fire at a full sprint from the deck of a speeding Raider skimmer, the rifle is equipped with recoil-dampening gyro-stabilizers and neural-impulse sights that lock onto the thermal and neurological signatures of panicked prey.

Patterns, variants & doctrine

Alongside the standard Kabalite Splinter Rifle, Drukhari raiders carry the one-handed Splinter Pistol for boarding actions, the twin-linked Shardcarbine favoured by winged Scourge mercenaries, and the heavy, multi-barrelled Splinter Cannon mounted on Venom skimmers, Raiders and Kabalite heavy weapon teams.

Notable patterns & relic examples

  • Kabalite Splinter Rifle: The barbed, long-barrelled toxin-shard rifle carried by every warrior of the Drukhari Kabals.
  • Splinter Cannon: High-cyclic-rate heavy support weapon capable of saturating an entire trench line with lethal neurotoxins.
  • Shardcarbine: Compact, high-rate-of-fire assault carbine wielded by winged Drukhari Scourges on the wing.
  • Soul-Seeker Ammunition: Esoteric Dark City toxin-crystals that home in on the nervous impulses of fleeing victims.
