1 / 4 · Click to enlargeLore & origins
Aberrants are the repugnant offshoots of the Genestealer brood cycle: hybrids born mutated away from the normal pattern for their generation. They are misshapen, lumpen and slow-witted, but immensely strong, have superhuman endurance, and feel an overpowering need to protect the rest of the cult. Not even a Magus knows exactly what produces them. Perhaps the purestrain's original implantation of one parent was interrupted or spoiled. Perhaps the interbreeding happened during a warp event or sorcerous rite. Or perhaps the forbidden dabbling of curious bio-alchemists created monsters that killed their makers at birth.
Whatever the cause, Aberrants soon seek out the deepest of their gene-sect's dungeon-like lairs and shamble through the dark until a Magus or Patriarch gives them purpose. From then on they are the cult's pure muscle. A strange psychic resonance from the Patriarch makes cultists fiercely protective of these abominations, so they are found work rather than disposed of. With power-field tools they dig tunnels and clear caverns beneath the prey world's cities, crack open buried hab-blocks and forgotten weapons caches, or pack old structures with enough mining explosives to bring down whatever has been built above.
They are also the cult's greatest risk. Most are kept in mines and tunnels far from the authorities, or confined to the Biophagus's lair to be experimented on, because they are plainly inhuman and their discovery could doom the whole brood. A rare few are trained as assassins. Sent out at night in sackcloth, hessian or industrial webbing, they lumber through sewers and undercrofts, climb into their target's hab, and once they catch the scent abandon all stealth and smash a path to their victim. Afterwards they vanish back underground, sometimes for years, until the day of the uprising lets them loose.
Appearance & wargear
Aberrants are misshapen, lumpen, obviously inhuman hybrids, physically powerful and armed with filth-encrusted rending claws. Most swing a heavy power hammer or power pick adapted from industrial mining gear, the field-augmented tools of the cult's tunnelling work. Many wear rags, sackcloth or webbing. Their slurred, moaning praise of the Patriarch carries over the noise of battle. Hypermorphs are even more monstrous. As a hive fleet nears, their spines stretch into muscular tails tipped with a hooked barb able to slice through meat, bone and infantry armour.

Battlefield role & tactics
Aberrants are shock assault troops and a moving wall of flesh. When the uprising comes they stomp and shuffle towards the heaviest resistance, tearing just as easily through hastily formed garrisons, fortified emplacements and armoured vehicles. Their endurance lets them soak up horrific wounds without slowing, and the rest of the cult advances behind them. Their masters use them like attack dogs, unleashing them to spread terror and confusion through spectacular destruction.
