Overview

Grandsire Wurm is the Genestealer Patriarch at the heart of the Pauper Princes, the cult that rotted the fortress world of Vigilus from within. He is so good at avoiding discovery that his worshippers claim he is as intangible as mist, slipping from shadow to shadow at will. He is one of the few named Patriarchs in recent Imperial records.

He is a Patriarch, the original Genestealer from which a cult descends. His psychic presence binds his brood together, and his cultists revere him as a holy father. He is seldom seen, even by his own followers, and the cult's lore speaks of him as a being of mist and shadow. Grandsire Wurm is the Patriarch of the Pauper Princes cult on Vigilus. It was one of a group of Purestrain Genestealers sent from the wider Pauper Princes cult on Chancer's Vale, and the only one to survive the journey. It made its home beneath the continent of Megaborealis and began spreading its infection. When the Vigilus war broke out, its cult rose in the uprisings.

Origins

The Pauper Princes trace their roots to a place their lore calls Chancer's Vale, and they revere the 'Star Children', the Tyranid hive fleets they believe will deliver them. Wurm made his lair deep beneath the continent of Megaborealis, in a hidden cathedrum. Over generations his brood spread through the bore-hives, and only Wurm knows how far.

His cult has a long history. Codex: Genestealer Cults (7th and 8th editions) presents the Pauper Princes as one of the six cults documented by the Ordo Xenos. It is also one of the most powerful, active on more than fifteen planets with billions of members. It began on Chancer's Vale, a slum world so poor that many people joined willingly, not because of the Genestealer's Kiss but because Magus Marovitch Tenndarc promised them a way off the planet. Constant salt mining in the dead seas gives cultists dry, wrinkled, pallid skin, which they treat as a sign of blessing. They escaped aboard the super-barge Just Strength.

Key events

  1. Nested beneath Megaborealis and seeded his bloodline through generations of Vigilus's underhive workers.
  2. Spread the cult's creed into the highest levels of Vigilan society, reportedly reaching the Ministorum of Saint's Haven and the ruling Aquilarian Council.
  3. Rose openly during the War of Beasts, seizing control of the Dirkden Hivesprawl.
  4. Gene-poisoned many of the Hollows, the giant reservoirs that supplied the arid world's water. The gene-sect Claw of the Thirsting Wyrm had long lurked beneath Greigan Hollow.
  5. Was hunted by Space Wolves through the underhives while Marneus Calgar's Ultramarines led the wider defence of Vigilus. The intervention blunted the uprising, but by the war's end more Vigilans were said to be in thrall to Wurm than loyal to the Emperor.

The 8th-edition codex (pp. 28–29) explains why the Imperium struggles to behead the cult. Its followers march through flames to cover their masters' retreat and form walls of bodies against gunfire. In one report they charged an Ork Bonebreaka to jam its gears and save their Patriarch. When Tenndarc died stopping a Ratling sniper's shot meant for the Patriarch, the cult quadrupled in size, and it has hated the Imperial Guard ever since. Vigilus Defiant names some of the brood-cults that spread through Wurm's Megaborealis tunnels, including the Writhing Wyrm and the Claw of the Thirsting Wyrm. The Pauper Princes later turned up as far away as the Vorotheion Uprising in Psychic Awakening: The Greater Good, and on Terra itself, where the discovery of a cell under the Patriarch Begetor began the Unthinkable War.

Legacy

Grandsire Wurm is the most successful Genestealer Cult leader ever recorded, the hidden master of the Pauper Princes on Vigilus. His cult turned a strategically vital world against itself, and even after the Imperium's victory, his influence lingered in the bloodlines of the people. He shows how Genestealer Cults can hollow out a world from within long before the Tyranids arrive. Wurm is the Genestealer Cult in miniature: patient, hidden and almost impossible to uproot.
