Lore & history

For more than ten thousand years, no silhouette has inspired greater awe inside the Imperial Palace on Terra than a golden giant of the Adeptus Custodes standing motionless on vigil with a Guardian Spear planted in his gauntlet. Both a weapon of peerless lethality and the ceremonial badge of office of the Emperor's personal bodyguard, the Guardian Spear dates back to the unification of Terra and the earliest days of the Legio Custodes. In the hands of a Custodian, this towering halberd is spun, thrust and fired in a single fluid, balletic martial art that makes a mockery of its immense weight.

Every Guardian Spear is forged in the arcane armouries of the Imperial Palace and genetically keyed to the DNA and biometric signature of the individual Custodian for whom it was made. Should any unauthorized hand—even that of a Space Marine or an Inquisitor—attempt to grip the haft or pull the trigger without the rightful owner's genetic code, the weapon's machine spirit locks its firing mechanism and power circuits completely dead, or discharges a lethal bio-electric shock into the thief.

Outside the Ten Thousand of the Adeptus Custodes, only one group of warriors in the entire Imperium is ever granted the honour of carrying a Guardian Spear: the Watch Masters of the Deathwatch, who guard the outer Sentinel Watch Fortresses against the xenos threat and are entrusted with a slightly scaled-down pattern of the Custodians' iconic weapon as a mark of supreme inquisitorial and martial authority.

Design, mechanism & battlefield effect

A Guardian Spear is an exquisite fusion of a master-crafted power halberd and an integrated, dual-barrelled or heavy-calibre boltgun known as a bolt caster. The long haft is forged from auramite and adamantium, balanced so precisely that a Custodian can whirl it one-handed or two-handed to intercept incoming blades and projectiles. At the tip sits a broad, leaf-shaped power blade sheathed in a golden-blue molecular disruption field capable of shearing cleanly through Chaos Terminator plate or Tyranid chitin in a single sweeping arc.

Directly beneath the base of the spearhead, built seamlessly into the collar of the haft, sits a compact, high-velocity bolter assembly fed from a curved sickle magazine or an internal drum. Firing Controls are recessed into the grip of the shaft itself and linked via induction pads in the Custodian's gauntlets to the auto-senses of his auramite war-plate.

Because the firearm and the blade share the same central axis, a Custodian never has to holster a rifle or draw a sword as the distance closes. He can fire a double-tap of mass-reactive bolts into a charging warrior's faceplate at twenty paces, spin the butt-spike around to crush the skull of a flanker, and drive the crackling power blade through the heart of a third foe before the first body hits the floor.

Patterns, variants & doctrine

While the standard Guardian Spear armed with a bolt caster is the primary weapon of the Custodian Guard, the ancient armouries of Terra preserve several revered variants of the design. Custodian Wardens and Allarus Terminators frequently trade the spearhead for the heavier, crescent-bladed Castellan Axe—a weapon whose reinforced disruption edge can cleave straight through the armour of Dreadnoughts and Daemon Engines when raw chopping power is needed over duelling speed.

Even rarer are the Adrasite and Pyrithite Spears carried by specialised Custodes veteran sodalities since the Great Crusade: Adrasite Spears replace the standard bolter with an ancient Adrathic disintegrator beam weapon whose secrets are hoarded exclusively by the Emperor's household, while Pyrithite Spears integrate a high-intensity melta beam projector beneath the blade. Shield-Captain Valerian carries Gnosis, a treasured Guardian Spear dating back to the Siege of Terra, while Captain-General Trajann Valoris wields the Watcher's Axe, an incomparable masterwork halberd housing a potent bolt-cannon named the Eagle's Scream.

Notable patterns & relic examples

  • Custodes Guardian Spear: The gene-locked auramite power halberd and integrated bolt caster of the Emperor's Ten Thousand.
  • Castellan Axe & The Watcher's Axe: Heavy axe-headed variants carried by Custodian Wardens, Allarus Terminators and Captain-General Trajann Valoris.
  • Pyrithite & Adrasite Spears: Relic Custodes spears mounting integrated melta-beams or forbidden Adrathic disintegrators in place of the bolt caster.
  • Deathwatch Watch Master Guardian Spear: The only pattern of Guardian Spear permitted outside the Adeptus Custodes, carried by commanders of Deathwatch Watch Fortresses.
