Lore & history

Worn by every Chapter Master of the Ultramarines since the days of Primarch Roboute Guilliman himself, the Gauntlets of Ultramar are among the most famous and revered relics of the Five Hundred Worlds. According to the annals of Macragge, Roboute Guilliman reclaimed this matched pair of colossal, gilded power fists from the fallen Chaos Champion whom he slew following the Gamalia Reclusiam Massacre during the Great Scouring. Reforged, purified and consecrated by the Chapter's finest Techmarines and Chaplains, the gauntlets were declared the eternal badge of office for the Lord Macragge.

For ten millennia, no Techmarine—nor even an Archmagos of the Adeptus Mechanicus—has been able to replicate the internal balance, servo-responsiveness and compactness of the Gauntlets of Ultramar. In the hands of Chapter Master Marneus Augustus Calgar, they have crushed the skulls of Ork Warbosses at the Siege of Zalathras, torn the head from an Avatar of Khaine, battered through the chitin of the Swarmlord's Hive Guard during the Battle for Macragge, and held the Vigilus defiance against Abaddon the Despoiler.

When Marneus Calgar became the first Space Marine to cross the Rubicon Primaris during the Era Indomitus, trading his ancient Armour of Antilochus for the custom Mark X Gravis Armour of Heraclus, the Gauntlets of Ultramar were seamlessly integrated onto his upgraded Primaris frame—continuing their unbroken vigil at the head of the Thirteenth Chapter.

Design, mechanism & battlefield effect

Each of the Gauntlets of Ultramar is a master-crafted power fist sheathed in gleaming cobalt-blue ceramite and heavy gold filigree embossed with the Ultima symbol of Macragge. Inside the oversized fingers and knuckles sits a dual-layered molecular disruption generator and high-speed micro-actuator bundle. Whereas a standard Astartes power fist is slow and ponderous to swing, the ancient artificer servos inside the Gauntlets of Ultramar respond instantaneously to Calgar's neural impulses, allowing him to parry enemy blades and rain down lightning-fast combinations that can pulp a Terminator or cave in the front glacis of a battle tank.

Mounted directly onto the dorsal plates of both wrists is a matched pair of master-crafted, belt-fed twin bolters. Heavy brass-linked ammunition belts snake directly from a massive backpack munition hopper over Calgar's shoulders into the breeches of both gauntlets.

Linked directly to the auto-senses of Calgar's helmet and bionic eye, the twin wrist-bolters can unleash a withering crossfire of .75-calibre Kraken-grade mass-reactive shells while Calgar's fists remain completely free to grapple, block and crush any foe who survives the hail of bolts.

Patterns, variants & doctrine

While the Gauntlets of Ultramar themselves are entirely unique and irreplaceable, their combination of twin power fists with integrated dorsal belt-fed bolters served as the direct tactical inspiration for Archmagos Dominus Belisarius Cawl's Primaris Aggressor Squads. The Auto Boltstorm Gauntlets worn by Gravis-armoured Aggressors across every Space Marine Chapter are a mass-produced homage to the Lord Macragge's ancient relic.

Within the Ultramarines Chapter itself, Roboute Guilliman's own left-hand weapon—the Hand of Dominion—shares a clear ancestral design lineage with the Gauntlets of Ultramar, pairing a Primarch-sized disruption gauntlet with an integrated heavy rotary bolter.
