A Scout is a Neophyte, a recruit who has started the transformation into a Space Marine but has not finished it. He has received some implants but not all of them. Crucially, he lacks the Black Carapace, the neural interface that lets a Space Marine use power armour. In most Codex Chapters Scouts belong to the 10th Company, where veteran Scout Sergeants teach them stealth, marksmanship and the rites of the Chapter.
Scout duty is a training stage, not a career. A Neophyte proves himself in reconnaissance, sabotage and ambush, and is then raised to full battle-brother. The most famous instructor is Sergeant Torias Telion of the Ultramarines 10th Company. He has served under three Chapter Masters and turned down promotion repeatedly so that he can keep training recruits. He is renowned as one of the finest marksmen among the Adeptus Astartes.
Scouts are Neophytes who have not yet received all their implants, and are not yet allowed full power armour. They serve in the 10th Company, learning stealth, reconnaissance and marksmanship before they are elevated to battle-brothers. Veteran sergeants such as the Ultramarines' Torias Telion train them. Some Chapters, such as the Crimson Fists, see their Scout company as the very future of the Chapter.
Appearance & wargear
Scouts wear lighter carapace armour instead of power armour and often go bareheaded, showing faces that are still partly human. They carry bolters, bolt pistols, combat knives, Astartes shotguns or long-barrelled sniper rifles. Camo cloaks help them hide, and some squads carry a heavy bolter or missile launcher. Scout Bikers ride light Astartes bikes for fast reconnaissance.

Battlefield role & tactics
Scouts go first. They infiltrate ahead of the main army, mark targets, sabotage enemy defences and pick off officers with sniper fire. Their lighter armour makes them more vulnerable than battle-brothers, so they rely on concealment and surprise. Chapters known for stealth, such as the Raven Guard and White Scars, prize Scout work highly.
In the Era Indomitus, Primaris Phobos units such as Infiltrators and Eliminators have taken over some of these duties. Scouts nonetheless remain in service, and Games Workshop released new Scout Squad models in 2023.
They infiltrate ahead of the army, seize forward positions, pick off key targets and disrupt the enemy. They are fragile but valuable.

Field maintenance and biological recovery logs indicate that extended deployment without liturgical recalibration or bio-stasis rest degrades targeting and metabolic stability by less than 4% per solar week—far outperforming standard sector baselines—while post-engagement recovery teams prioritize the immediate extraction of their core wargear, neural/gene-seed components, or machine-spirit memory cores before enemy scavengers can exploit them.
