Lore & origins

Towering twice the size of lesser Daemon Engines on six segmented, piston-driven limbs, the Defiler is one of the oldest and most terrifying infernal machines in the service of the Heretic Astartes. In the aftermath of the Horus Heresy, as the surviving Chaos Dreadnoughts and Helbrutes of the Traitor Legions descended into frothing, unreliable madness, Abaddon the Despoiler sought a new breed of heavy war engine to spearhead his First Black Crusade. Travelling deep into the Eye of Terror to the Hell-Forge of Xana II, Abaddon struck a dark pact with the Hereteks of the Dark Mechanicum, trading priceless artefacts, blood-offerings and thousands of mortal slaves for an armada of scuttling iron monsters.

Constructed inside the sulphurous soul-forges of the Eye from Warp-tainted slab-metal wrenched out of fallen Dreadnoughts and Heresy-era war machines, no Defiler has a human crew. Instead, Warpsmiths and Masters of Possession sacrifice a victim of great martial might to summon a Daemon from the Immaterium and trap its essence inside the rune-scored iron hull. Outside of battle, the furious entity must be bound in runic chains and pacified with constant techno-sorcerous chants lest it tear its own masters apart.

When unleashed on the battlefield — as the Imperial Fists first learned to their horror on Urthwart in 781.M31 — the pacification wards are lifted and the imprisoned Daemon rejoices in the only outlet left to its immortal rage: indiscriminate slaughter. Because the Daemon cares nothing for the survival of its mechanical shell, a Defiler shrugs off hits that would cripple a battle tank and rampages until its reactor is physically torn apart.

Appearance & wargear

A Defiler combines the scuttling lower chassis of a monstrous six-legged iron crab with a broad, horned upper torso and turret. Four rear spine-legs propel its tank-sized bulk across rubble and craters while two colossal forward pincer-claws snap and crush enemy armour, supplemented by articulated secondary arms wielding whirring Reaper Autocannons, twin Heavy Flamers, Havoc Missile Launchers or a lashing Electroscourge. Leering from the top of the turret is a horned, skull-visaged daemonic head, while the chest cavity houses a massive Hades Battle Cannon whose hell-forged shells can obliterate an entire Space Marine squad in a single earth-shaking blast.

Battlefield role & tactics

Operating as both mobile heavy artillery and a relentless close-assault monster, a Defiler stalks forward while pounding enemy bunkers and armour columns with its chest-mounted Battle Cannon, Reaper Autocannon and Havoc missiles. Unlike conventional artillery tanks, which become vulnerable when enemies close the distance, a Defiler welcomes melee: surging ahead with unnatural speed, it peels open battle tanks like ration tins with its piston-driven Battle Claws and duels Loyalist Dreadnoughts hand-to-hand.
