1 / 4 · Click to enlargeLore & origins
Founded in the wake of the War of the Beast during M32, the Deathwatch stands as the sacred Chamber Militant of the Ordo Xenos. Unlike ordinary Chapters, the Deathwatch recruits no neophytes; instead, battle-hardened veterans are tithed by oath from hundreds of Chapters across the galaxy to serve a vigil at remote Watch Fortresses. Upon taking the Apocryphon Oath, each Marine repaints his plate in ceremonial matte black—save for his right pauldron, which retains his parent Chapter's heraldry so as not to anger its Machine Spirit, and his left arm, which is electro-plated in gleaming silver.
Appearance & wargear
Deathwatch Veterans wear heavily modified Mark VIII Errant and Mark X Tacticus power armour painted midnight black, with an intricately engraved silver left pauldron and vambrace bearing the high-gothic script of the Inquisition.

Field maintenance and biological recovery logs indicate that extended deployment without liturgical recalibration or bio-stasis rest degrades targeting and metabolic stability by less than 4% per solar week—far outperforming standard sector baselines—while post-engagement recovery teams prioritize the immediate extraction of their core wargear, neural/gene-seed components, or machine-spirit memory cores before enemy scavengers can exploit them.
