Lore & origins

The Adeptus Custodes are the Emperor's personal guard. They are created from carefully selected children of Terra's noble houses and transformed by gene-crafting even more advanced than the Space Marines'. Each Custodian is an individual, and only a few thousand serve at any time. In the 41st Millennium they guard the Imperial Palace and the Emperor on the Golden Throne.

The Custodes are divided into three forms of heavy infantry: the Custodian Guard, the Custodian Wardens and the Allarus Custodians. The Custodian Guard form the backbone of a Shield Host. They are only rank-and-file in the sense that they are more numerous than the specialists. Even one of them is a match for many enemy elites.

Squads are not permanent. A Custodian may move from one squad to another before each new campaign or even each battle, and each fights in his own individual style. After centuries of seclusion the Custodes went to war more often in the late 41st Millennium, including at the Fall of Cadia and in the Indomitus Crusade.

The Adeptus Custodes are the Emperor's personal guardians. The Emperor Himself created them before the Space Marines. Each one is individually engineered from a child of Terra's noble families, and the process is more elaborate and less standardised than Astartes gene-seed implantation. Each Custodian is a peerless warrior and a scholar, and their numbers have always been small, said to be only a few thousand at most. For most of the Imperium's history they rarely left the Imperial Palace, with exceptions such as the Golden Throne's defence and occasional 'vigils'. After the Great Rift opened, the Custodes deployed more widely, and their 'Shield Hosts' now appear across the galaxy.

Battlefield role & tactics

Custodian Guard are an elite core. They hold objectives against impossible odds, fight in close combat with spear and blade, and lay down accurate fire. They are often deployed in small numbers but are enormously resilient.

Custodian Guard are the core line of a Custodes army, an elite force of supremely skilled warriors who can match small squads of almost any enemy. They hold ground and win duels. Custodian Wardens are their more heavily armed veterans, and Allarus Custodians are their Terminator equivalent. Their weakness is numbers: every Custodian lost is a serious blow.
