Overview

The master of fortification who held the Imperial Palace against Horus's armies during the Siege of Terra. Stoic and honest to a fault, he was the Emperor's chosen defender of the Throneworld.

He commanded the Imperial Fists, defenders of the Palace and masters of siegecraft. His fortifications held long enough for the loyalist reinforcements to arrive. After the Heresy he opposed Guilliman's Codex Astartes at first, but ultimately accepted it. His hand is preserved as a relic by the Imperial Fists. Dorn was the Praetorian of Terra, the master of defence who held the Imperial Palace during the Siege of Terra. He was stubborn, plain-spoken and dutiful. After the Heresy he oversaw the Imperium's early defences, and his Legion was later divided into the Imperial Fists, the Black Templars and the Crimson Fists.

Origins

Found on the ice world of Inwit, he was raised among its clan-houses and later travelled to meet the Emperor with a fleet, offering the Imperium his allegiance.

On Inwit, he was raised among the clan-houses of an icy world where survival depended on discipline and endurance. His character was shaped by its brutal climate, making him patient, resolute and unafraid of hardship. He took command of the VII Legion and quickly became one of the Emperor's most trusted sons.

Key events

  1. Was found on the ice world Inwit and pledged allegiance to the Emperor, bringing with him the mobile star fortress Phalanx.
  2. Led the Imperial Fists in the Great Crusade, gaining a reputation for siegecraft and unbending loyalty.
  3. Was ordered back to Terra to fortify the Palace as the Heresy began.
  4. Commanded the defence of the Palace throughout the Siege of Terra.
  5. Led the post-Heresy pursuit of traitors, including the Iron Cage campaign in which Perturabo trapped and bled the Imperial Fists.
  6. Is said to have died fighting aboard a Chaos ship; the Imperial Fists' relic of his hand is claimed to be all that was recovered.
  7. His sons were divided by the Codex reforms into the Imperial Fists, the Black Templars and the Crimson Fists, among other successors.

Battles & campaigns

  • Siege of Terra: He commanded the Palace's defence for months against overwhelming odds and orchestrated the last stand at the Eternity Wall and the Delphic Battlement.
  • Iron Cage: After the Heresy he picked an assault on an Iron Warriors fortress as the 'cleansing pain' his Legion needed before it was split into Chapters. Perturabo's trap made it a disaster, and Guilliman had to bring his Legion to break the siege.
  • Disappearance: He fell fighting aboard a traitor vessel. Some tales say his body was carried off into the Eye of Terror, while others claim only his hand was recovered. The Imperial Fists keep the Hand of Dorn as their holiest relic, whatever its true origin.

Personality

Blunt, stubborn and dutiful. His bitter rivalry with Perturabo is one of the Heresy's defining feuds.

He was honest to the point of bluntness, and he expected others to be equally direct. He lacked the diplomatic subtlety of some of his brothers, which made him enemies. His stubbornness was both his strength and his weakness: it made him an unbreakable defender, but it also made him slow to change his mind.

Legacy

Dorn embodies Imperial defence and stubborn sacrifice. His Chapter guards Terra's traditions. His rivalry with Perturabo outlived the Heresy and still shapes both Legions' self-image. Where and how he died remains disputed. The Imperial Palace's defences, the Imperial Fists' siegecraft and the zeal of the Black Templars are all his legacy.

Contested & retconned lore

The details of Dorn's death are uncertain. Heresy novels show him killing an Alpharius at Pythos, which conflicts with older accounts crediting Guilliman.
