Overview

Mephiston is the master of the Blood Angels Librarius and one of the most powerful psykers in the Adeptus Astartes. He is the only Blood Angel known to have overcome the Black Rage. His Chapter both honours and fears him.

He wields the force sword Vitarus and possesses psychic powers of extraordinary strength. He has fought Tyranids, Orks and the forces of Chaos. In the Era Indomitus he crossed the Rubicon Primaris and emerged even more powerful. Mephiston, Lord of Death, is the Chief Librarian of the Blood Angels. He was once the Librarian Calistarius. During the Second War for Armageddon he was buried alive under the ruins of Hades Hive and taken by the Black Rage. He fought his way out and emerged as Mephiston, who claims to have conquered the Flaw. He is one of the most powerful psykers in the Adeptus Astartes.

Origins

He began as Brother Calistarius, a valiant Librarian, and fought in the cleansing of the space hulk Sin of Damnation near Baal. On Armageddon he was buried under rubble for seven days, where the Black Rage overtook him. He fought it off and dug himself free, reborn as Mephiston.

Key events

  1. Fought in the cleansing of the space hulk Sin of Damnation as Brother Calistarius.
  2. Overcame the Black Rage after being entombed on Armageddon, emerging changed and far stronger.
  3. Rose to command the Librarius as the Lord of Death.
  4. Lived through the Chapter's crisis on Cybele, when Brother Arkio claimed to be Sanguinius reborn and split the Chapter in a schism secretly engineered by a Chaos-serving Inquisitor.
  5. Willingly crossed the Rubicon Primaris after the Great Rift opened.

Codex: Blood Angels (5th edition) adds more legends. In 977.M41 the daemon M'kar trapped him in the crystal caves of Solon V and tried to persuade him that he was already on the road to daemonhood. Mephiston refused and strangled him. In 992.M41 he fought Hive Fleet Kraken on the hive world of Hollonan with Strike Force Sanguinatus and was given a commemorative back banner. In James Swallow's Deus Sanguinius he leads the force sent against the Arkio insurrection and directs Rafen to kill the false Sanguinius. When the Word Bearers and the Lord of Change Malfallax unleash the Black Rage, even Mephiston falls to it, until Rafen uses the Spear of Telesto to clear his mind.

Guy Haley's The Devastation of Baal sends him into the Cruor Mountains with Gaius Rhacelus and Lucius Antros to attempt a ritual to kill Ka'Bandha before the daemon could strike. The ritual failed and a cave-in trapped them for the rest of the siege. Darkness in the Blood shows the price of his power. Overwhelmed by his own abilities aboard the Dominance, he was confined in the Arx Angelicum, and Rhacelus urged him to cross the Rubicon Primaris. During the procedure he met the Sanguinor and the Black Angel in the warp. A figure that seemed to be Sanguinius told him that if he took the Black Angel into himself, he could hold back the Rage for a time at the cost of his soul. He emerged saying that he both was and was not Mephiston, and Dante overruled Astorath to spare him.

Battles & campaigns

  • Second War for Armageddon: Buried in the rubble of Hades Hive, he became Mephiston.
  • Devastation of Baal: He fought in the defence of Baal against Hive Fleet Leviathan.
  • Era Indomitus: He crossed the Rubicon Primaris after the Great Rift.

Personality

Cold, controlled and remote. His intellect and self-mastery are absolute, and some brothers wonder what he really became in the ruins.

He is focused and rational, a master of his own mind who rarely shows emotion. He is utterly devoted to the Blood Angels and their survival. His aloofness and his history make even his brothers uneasy, but he is a loyal protector of Sanguinius's legacy.

Darius Hinks' Mephiston novels describe some of his gifts. He can project his mind into Aeldari psykers and drive them mad, divide his soul into several doubles, and even stop time, although he continues to age while the universe stands still, so he could waste his whole life in a frozen moment. In City of Light he infiltrates the Planet of the Sorcerers and stops the Daemon Prince Zadkiel from summoning nine Silver Towers to Terra.

Legacy

Mephiston proves that the Black Rage is not necessarily a death sentence. His survival has given the Blood Angels hope and fear in equal measure. He is the most potent psyker in his Chapter's history and a living reminder of the darkness that lies within every son of Sanguinius. He fights with the force sword Vitarus and his mastery of the Librarius makes him the Chapter's foremost authority on the Warp and the curse that afflicts Sanguinius's sons. He is both the Blood Angels' greatest psychic champion and a living sign of their curse.
