Her role in the Fall of Cadia and Guilliman's resurrection made her one of the most important Inquisitors of the era. Katarinya Greyfax is a Puritan inquisitor of the Ordo Hereticus. She played a crucial role in the final days of Cadia and in Guilliman's resurrection. Since her escape from Trazyn the Infinite, she has become a feared figure and serves as the self-appointed executioner of anyone she declares a heretic.
Origins
Centuries ago she and her Tempestus Scion bodyguard were captured by Trazyn the Infinite and preserved in a tesseract labyrinth on Solemnace. Trazyn also implanted mindshackle scarabs that prevent her from harming him.
Before Trazyn added her to his collection, Greyfax was already an Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor famed for hunting heresy and witchcraft. She fights with the power sword Tyrantslayer and serves as both an investigator and a battlefield commander. When she was freed from stasis to defend Cadia, she brought the uncompromising standards of her earlier career into the Era Indomitus.
Key events
- Was released by Trazyn when he chose to aid the defence of Cadia against Abaddon.
- Fought on Cadia with Cawl, Creed and Celestine.
- Joined the Celestinian Crusade that reached Macragge and saw Guilliman reborn.
- Was summoned by Guilliman, then Lord Commander, and sent with Grey Knights and the undead Inquisitor Horst to find the Eye of Night.
- Struck a reluctant bargain with the ancient Chaos seer Moriana to reach the daemon prince's tower that held the artefact.
White Dwarf (January 2017) and Gathering Storm: Fall of Cadia describe her shock when Trazyn released her onto Cadia's battlefields. Imperial psykers were using their powers without sanction, Wulfen were running loose and soldiers were worshipping Celestine, which she saw as idolatry. She fought anyway, even beside those she considered abominations, and personally faced Abaddon. After Cadia fell, she fled with Celestine and Cawl until Eldrad led them into the webway on Klaisus. Gathering Storm: Rise of the Primarch puts her at the Fortress of Hera when Guilliman was revived. During the voyage to Terra she let go of her suspicion of Celestine, and Cawl removed Trazyn's mindshackle scarab.
In the audio drama Eye of Night she and Inquisitor Horst entered the Eye of Terror for Guilliman. Moriana told them that the amnesiac Horst knew where the relic was hidden. Greyfax killed the daemon prince wearing Horst's body, killing Horst with it, and took the Eye of Night from its corpse. Codex: Death Guard (8th edition) shows her laying a trap of Deathstrike missiles with the White Scars that destroyed a Death Guard force on Dortwyr. In the audio drama Our Martyred Lady she protected Ecclesiarch Decius XXIII from assassins with Celestine, until the plot was revealed as the Tyrant of Blueflame's attempt to possess the Saint. The short story Mindshackle has her execute Inquisitor Helynna Valeria, who had also been enslaved by Trazyn's scarabs.

- The Eye of Night: She later hunted for an artefact Guilliman hoped would seal the Great Rift.
Personality
Puritan, harsh and uncompromising, with a temper she must constantly master.
She is harsh and unforgiving, intolerant of heresy and weakness. She keeps her temper in check through discipline, but it can flare. Her loyalty to the Imperium is absolute, but her pride makes her difficult to work with.

Legacy
Greyfax is a puritan of the old school. She was imprisoned in Trazyn's collection and then released to fight at Cadia. She embodies the Inquisition's uncompromising stance against heresy, and her harsh judgements, including against Celestine and Cawl, show how fear and faith collide at the top of the Imperium. Her arc runs from Trazyn's prisoner to one of Guilliman's trusted agents, which makes her a useful lens on the transition from M41 to M42. Greyfax represents the uncompromising extreme of the Ordo Hereticus.
Codex: Imperial Agents (10th edition, p. 35) confirms she has become a Radical who will accept any means that serves humanity. The novel Hand of Abaddon places her in charge of the Inquisitorial conclave on Luna, briefing her subordinate Rostov about the attempt to rebuild the Anathame. The Fall of Cadia gives her rosette number as 7134/S3. She fights with a master-crafted power sword and condemnor boltgun, plus a psyocculum called the Eye of the Emperor.
