Overview

Kairos Fateweaver is a two-headed Lord of Change and Tzeentch's oracle. One head sees the past and the other the future, but each may lie as easily as tell the truth.

He carries the Staff of Tomorrow, topped by his Tome of Destiny, a book that rewrites itself as his two heads speak. He is the mightiest of the Lords of Change and Tzeentch's foremost seer. Because he is blind to the present, he judges where he is in time by the pages the Tome is currently writing. Kairos Fateweaver is the two-headed Oracle of Tzeentch and the mightiest Lord of Change. One head sees all of the past and the other all possible futures, but he cannot see the present. When petitioned, one head always answers truthfully and the other answers with an equally convincing lie. Kairos is said to have appeared to Lorgar during the Word Bearers' Pilgrimage in the Eye of Terror, before the Heresy.

Origins

He was once Tzeentch's vizier, the first among the god's Greater Daemons, until his master reshaped him.

According to legend, he was once a Lord of Change who sought to understand the future and was punished, or rewarded, by Tzeentch with two heads: one seeing the past, the other the future. His prophecies make him invaluable to the god, though his visions are as likely to deceive as to inform.

Key events

  1. Appeared to Lorgar during the primarch's pilgrimage into the Eye of Terror.
  2. Helped trap Guilliman's fleet in the Maelstrom during the Terran Crusade.
  3. Fought in the Battle of Ulthwé after the Great Rift.
  4. Invaded the Stygius Sector during the Era Indomitus.
  5. Lost his staff when a rebellious Daemon Prince stole it and hid it in the Garden of Nurgle. Kairos later infiltrated the Garden during the Great Game and recovered it.

Heresy-era stories add several encounters with the Primarchs. After the Thramas Crusade, the Lion's flagship Invincible Reason was thrown into the warp without its Gellar field and a host of Tzeentchian daemons boarded it. In a telepathic exchange Kairos let slip that the Emperor was still alive. The Lion stabbed one of his heads with the blade Despair and banished him, mockingly asking whether he had seen that coming. The ship survived at the cost of 300 Astartes and 600 serfs. Earlier still, Kairos had tempted Lorgar with revenge on Guilliman for the shame of Monarchia on Khur, knowing that this would hurt Chaos's chances in the war to come.

John French's Ahriman novels describe the daemon bound inside the Iron Oculus, which Ahriman recovered from the machine race called the Yokai. Kairos was moved into a Yokai body named Aforgomon and helped Ahriman hunt the scattered Shards of Magnus. He also manipulated the sorcerer Hathor Maat into altering a single line of the Book of Magnus. On Nikaea he finally manifested through Maat. Magnus's shard named him 'The One Who Comes at the Appointed Time' and briefly imprisoned him. Kairos then carried the Thousand Sons back to the Planet of the Sorcerers before disappearing.

In Gathering Storm III, the daemon who stormed the bridge of Guilliman's flagship was Kairos. Librarian Pollonius's mind was turned against him and his body exploded into blue fire, and Guilliman pushed Sicarius clear just in time. Shots fired at Kairos turned to glittering dust. Kairos imprisoned the Primarch in a Blackstone Fortress held by the Red Corsairs under Verngar the Apostate, a gift from Abaddon. When Skarbrand's Khornate armada attacked, Kairos stayed out of reach and cast spells from a safe distance. Even he could not fully foresee a Primarch's fate, and Guilliman escaped through the Webway. After the Great Rift opened, Kairos was among Tzeentch's servants who invaded the Stygius Sector, an attempt to rival Nurgle's realm in the Scourge Stars.

Battles & campaigns

  • Lorgar's Pilgrimage: He met Lorgar in the Eye of Terror, decades before the Heresy.
  • Rare battlefield appearances: On the battlefield he twists both the landscape and fate.
  • Era Indomitus: Guilliman's return sent waves through the Warp that the Lords of Change did not ignore.

Personality

Riddling, scheming and arrogant.

Kairos is arrogant about his knowledge and enjoys tormenting mortals with fragments of their fates. He cannot see the present, which leaves him vulnerable to surprise. Like all of Tzeentch's daemons, he loves schemes for their own sake and rarely shares the full picture of any plan.

Legacy

Kairos is a Lord of Change with two heads, one seeing the past and the other the future. His prophecies and schemes make him one of Tzeentch's most powerful servants. His role in the Terran Crusade and the Battle of Ulthwé show he still plays a part in the galaxy's fate. Kairos is proof that even Tzeentch's favourites are tools to be broken for knowledge.
