Overview

The swift and free-spirited Primarch of the steppe world Chogoris and master of lightning warfare. After the Heresy he pursued Drukhari raiders into the Webway and never returned.

He fought with the White Tiger Dao and led his Legion as a horde of fast-moving bikers and gunships. During the Heresy, he was slow to commit, but eventually stood firmly with the loyalists. His defence of the Lion's Gate space port during the Siege of Terra was crucial to the loyalist victory. The Khan of Chogoris led the White Scars, the swiftest of the Legions. He prized freedom, speed and his own judgement, and he was the last Primarch to declare for the Emperor once the Heresy began. His Legion's lightning raids and his own blade skills made him a master of mobile warfare. He later disappeared into the Webway while hunting the Dark Eldar, and he has never returned.

Origins

Adopted by a Chogorian tribe, he united the planet's clans through war before the Emperor found him.

Chogoris was a world of warring nations and nomadic tribes. As a foundling raised by a tribal chieftain, he led his people to unite the planet, defeating the Palatine empire that oppressed them. When the Emperor arrived, the Khan agreed to join the Crusade, but kept his Legion's distinct culture and independence.

Key events

  1. Was found on Chogoris, where he united the steppe tribes before meeting the Emperor.
  2. Led the V Legion, the White Scars, as a lightning-fast assault force largely free of the Imperial court.
  3. Was campaigning against Orks on Chondax when the Heresy broke out and was cut off from news of it.
  4. Was courted by both sides at the outbreak of the Heresy and ultimately chose loyalty.
  5. Fought through the Siege of Terra, notably in the struggle for the Lion's Gate spaceport.
  6. Disappeared into the Webway chasing Drukhari raiders after the Heresy.
  7. Fought Mortarion at Prospero, one of the great Primarch duels of the Heresy.

Because he was absent from Nikaea, his Legion's voice there belonged to a junior Librarian, Targutai Yesugei. At the end of the conclave Yesugei offered the Council a third option on the use of psychic powers, alongside the cases for a ban and for unrestricted use. The Khan himself had been ordered by Horus to the Chondax system just as the Council was gathering. He considered refusing and talked it over with Yesugei, but in the end he went. When the Heresy broke out, its news reached him on Chondax only as garbled astropathy: Russ had gone rogue, or the Warmaster had; the White Scars were to reinforce the Alpha Legion at the Alaxxes Nebula; Ferrus had killed Fulgrim. Russ then contacted him from Alaxxes, where the Space Wolves were recovering after Prospero and had been attacked.

Chris Wraight's Scars tells how close the Legion came to splitting. While the Khan was on Prospero's surface, Hasik Noyan-Khan held the flagship, and lodge members within the Legion moved into position for a coup. The Chogorian khan Shiban led his Brotherhood of the Storm across the void on modified Sojutsu voidbikes to retake the ship, where the Terran Torghun Khan held the halls against him and insisted that Hasik spoke for the Khagan. The Khan also took in Revuel Arvida, a Corvidae sergeant of the Thousand Sons and the last of his squad. For nearly four years afterwards the White Scars raided Traitor supply lines in the deep void until the losses became critical. They were trapped by the Ruinstorm and hunted at every turn, and they could not use the ancient Kalium Gate warp gate because their enemies had learned to predict their patterns.

Battles & campaigns

  • Chondax: The White Scars were fighting Orks far from the rest of the Imperium when news of Horus's treachery arrived. Horus and Magnus both tried to win the Khan over, but he chose loyalty in the end.
  • Lion's Gate Spaceport: During the Siege of Terra his mobile forces made a dawn raid and retook the Lion's Gate spaceport, halving the flow of traitor reinforcements to the Palace.
  • Disappearance in the Webway: After the Heresy he chased a Drukhari raiding force into the Webway and was never seen again.

Personality

Independent, proud and contemplative. He prized freedom, distrusted Terra's bureaucracy and was dangerous when underestimated.

He valued freedom above all and resented the bureaucracy and politics of Terra. He was a philosopher as well as a warrior, contemplating the meaning of the Great Crusade and its purpose. He was slow to trust, but fiercely loyal once his loyalty was given.

Weapons & Vehicles

Signature Wargear & PanoplyThe Warhawk of Chogoris rode a screaming white-and-gold jetbike, Sojutsu, and wielded the White Tiger Dao—a curved, master-crafted power sabre whose disruption field hummed with the speed of the wind—alongside an archeotech heavy pistol.

Legacy

The Khan's legacy is the White Scars' independence and their speed. They keep their own traditions, separate from Terra's politics. His disappearance into the Webway left a hope among his sons that he still rides somewhere. The White Scars keep his name alive in their brotherhoods' oral history, and many in the Chapter still believe he will return from the Webway.
