Overview

Deathleaper is a unique Lictor and Hive Fleet Leviathan's ultimate assassin and terror weapon. It weakens worlds before the swarm arrives.

It is stealthier than any ordinary Lictor, able to blend into its surroundings so completely that it can vanish in plain sight. It targets the leaders of a world rather than its armies, breaking command structures and morale from within. Whom it was ultimately hunting remains unclear, even to Imperial analysts. Deathleaper is a unique Lictor created by Leviathan's Hive Mind as a terror weapon. It instinctively understands how to break a prey population's will before the swarm arrives. It was first recorded on St. Caspelan in 997.M41, and nobody has learned what, or whom, it is truly hunting.

Origins

It was created by the Hive Mind as a terror weapon with an instinctive grasp of fear.

The Hive Mind created it as an advance on the Lictor strain, with an instinct for spreading fear and paranoia. It operates ahead of the swarm, preparing worlds for invasion by weakening their will to resist. Its success on St. Caspelan made it one of the most notorious Tyranid organisms on record.

Codex: Tyranids (5th edition) describes the Deathleaper as a unique Lictor created by Hive Fleet Leviathan as the ultimate terror weapon. Its purpose is to undermine morale, spread confusion and break the will to resist before the swarm arrives. The creature did not even have a name until St Caspalen gave it one. Across the Missionary World, sentries and watchguards vanished and were found days later with their brains removed. The Planetary Defence Force grew so frightened that its soldiers flinched at every shadow, and they called the unseen hunter "Deathleaper" to make it something they could name.

Key events

  1. Was first encountered on St. Caspelan in 997.M41.
  2. Repeatedly broke into Cardinal Salem's bunker for ten days, killing his advisers and guards but leaving him alive.
  3. Shattered Salem's sanity, undermining the defenders' morale more than his death would have.
  4. Leviathan invaded St. Caspelan and slaughtered its leaderless defenders.
  5. Slipped past ever-tighter security on each of those ten days, coming within reach of Salem every time before vanishing again.

The Deathleaper first appeared in the 4th-edition Fall of Medusa V global campaign. There it was presented not as a single creature but as a new Lictor strain with chameleonic skin so advanced it was almost invisible, with at least one specimen in each hive swarm on the planet. In that telling, Hive Fleet Behemoth was heading for Medusa V specifically to reabsorb the strain. Ultramarines Sergeant Erasmus feared it was the first sign of an evolutionary leap that could make the whole Tyranid vanguard nearly undetectable.

The Medusa V story ended unresolved. Imperial forces captured a Deathleaper, but it vanished. Investigators concluded it had escaped into space aboard a freighter, killed the crew and then moved to a second ship that came to investigate. Later material settled the matter differently. According to Warhammer Community's 2023 Lictor preview, the Deathleaper has become a species of its own and the apex of the Lictor bioform. Deathleapers can lead other vanguard organisms, sowing terror in the enemy ranks before striking from the flank at lightning speed.

Battles & campaigns

  • St. Caspelan (997.M41): It broke the planet's defenders before Leviathan arrived.

Personality

Deathleaper is cunning, patient and seemingly sadistic. It understands fear and uses it with chilling precision. It strikes, withdraws and strikes again, choosing to break minds rather than end lives when that serves the swarm better. Imperial observers find this deeply disturbing because it implies intent and understanding in a creature many assume to be a mere beast.

Weapons & Vehicles

Signature Wargear & PanoplyMaster-spawned Vanguard terror-weapon of Hive Fleet Leviathan, Deathleaper stalks enemy commanders behind a chameleon-skin stealth carapace, striking from the shadows with oversized Scything Talons, armor-piercing Rending Claws, and brain-sucking Flesh Hooks.

Legacy

Deathleaper is the nightmare of Imperial commanders, a Lictor-like hunter that targets leaders rather than armies. Its campaign on St. Caspelan showed that the Hive Mind can wage psychological war, breaking minds and morale before its swarms arrive. Its continued presence makes it one of the most feared Tyranid organisms on record. The Imperium knows it chiefly by the terror it leaves behind, which suits a creature that fights by fear as much as by claw. Deathleaper is proof that the Hive Mind understands fear.

Because of these two versions, the Deathleaper sits awkwardly between a single named monster and a whole breed. What stays constant is its method. It treats fear as a resource to be farmed, not a side effect of killing, which makes it one of the clearest examples of the Hive Mind's alien intelligence.
