1 / 4 · Click to enlargeOverview
The first Captain-General of the Custodes and possibly the finest warrior the Emperor ever crafted short of a Primarch.
He wielded the Apollonian Spear, a weapon of immense power, and led the Custodes in both the Unification Wars and the Heresy. He fought against the Thousand Sons when they breached the Webway and fought in the defence of the Imperial Palace during the Siege of Terra. His role in the Heresy made him one of the Imperium's most renowned heroes. Constantin Valdor was the first Captain-General of the Legio Custodes and is often said to be the Emperor's first and most perfect creation. He wields the Apollonian Spear. He was present at the most important moments of the Heresy, including the Burning of Prospero and the war in the Webway. After the Siege he resigned as Captain-General, and his later fate is not recorded.
Origins
Created during the Unification Wars as one of the first Custodians.
He was made by the Emperor's own hand in the Emperor's laboratories on Terra, one of the first Custodians. His loyalty was absolute, and he served as the Emperor's personal guardian. He commanded the Custodes in the Emperor's campaigns before the Great Crusade.
The chronicles put him at the climax of the Unification Wars. At Maulland Sen, the Battle of the Red Frost, a small group of Custodians under Valdor and the Thunder Warriors defeated the Priest-King of the Nordyc hives while outnumbered nearly seven to one, and the Custodians captured the Priest-King. In the last stage, when the Thunder Warriors were no longer needed, Valdor's Custodians stood with the first Space Marines of the I Legion and carried out the purge of the obsolete gene-soldiers. Only after that could Terra be declared unified. Another account has him personally kill Koja Zu, Minister of the Anuatan Steppes. The Emperor ignored her pogroms and flesh trade. Her capital crime was stealing water, because her harvesters were draining the Last Ocean. Valdor took her young son into the Custodes, and the boy grew up to be Ra Endymion.
Key events
- Was the first Captain-General of the Adeptus Custodes, created by the Emperor as the template for the Custodians.
- Led the Custodian Guard through the Unification Wars and the early Great Crusade.
- Accompanied the Space Wolves and Sisters of Silence to Prospero to arrest Magnus.

- Disappeared from records some time after the Heresy.
He stood at the Emperor's side at the Council of Nikaea and took neither side, concerned only with his duty of protection. When Magnus wrecked the wards on the Imperial Webway project, Valdor led the Censure Host to Prospero under the Magisterium Lex Ultima, the authority that made the Custodes answerable only to the Emperor. He had been sent to bring Magnus back, but Leman Russ came as an executioner. Valdor resisted Russ at first until the Thousand Sons' corruption became clear. While most of the Ten Thousand fought the secret War Within the Webway, Valdor sat on the Terran War Council with Malcador, Dorn, Fabricator Locum Trimejia, Fabricator-General Zagreus Kane and Kaeria of the Silent Sisterhood. He suggested that the first Execution Force should combine an assassin from each Clade, and he argued with Dorn about the ethics of such methods until the Emperor ruled that there would be no more shadows and no more veils.
Battles & campaigns

Personality
Coldly loyal and unswerving; he is wary of primarchs and their pride.
He was utterly focused on his duty to protect the Emperor, sometimes at the expense of other relationships. He distrusted the Primarchs and their power. His dedication made him a fearsome warrior but also a lonely figure.

Legacy
Valdor set the Custodes on their path as the Emperor's personal guardians, sworn to the Throne rather than to any Primarch or council. Some believe he survives in some form, but his fate after the Heresy remains unknown. Later Captain-Generals such as Trajann Valoris inherited a role defined by his example. The Horus Heresy series has given him a much richer portrait, revealing a commander who is both the Emperor's most loyal servant and a figure capable of questioning his master's orders. The ethos of the Custodes, their absolute loyalty to the Emperor and their isolation from the rest of the Imperium all stem from Valdor's long tenure as Captain-General.
During the Great Scouring the Custodes stayed on Terra and reflected on their failure, and the conflicting records agree only that Valdor disappeared in this period. His weapons and armour never reached the Hall of Armaments. The Custodians elected a successor and continued their watch.
