Overview

Ciaphas Cain is a commissar celebrated as one of the Imperium's great heroes. In his private memoirs, edited by Inquisitor Amberley Vail, he insists he is a coward who simply had a talent for surviving. Sandy Mitchell's comedic novels about him are fan favourites.

He fights with a chainsword and laspistol, and his reputation for heroism has made him famous across the Imperium. His memoirs reveal a man who consistently claims to be avoiding danger, but somehow always ends up in the thick of it. He has fought Orks, Tyranids, Necrons, Chaos and the T'au. Ciaphas Cain, Hero of the Imperium, is a commissar whose memoirs, edited by Inquisitor Amberley Vail, reveal a self-professed coward who keeps stumbling into heroism. He is listed as permanently on active duty because he has been reported dead so many times, and his archive is held by the Inquisition. His wry humour and his aide Jurgen make his adventures among the most beloved in Black Library.

Origins

He came from an unnamed hive world. After training at the Schola Progenium he served mostly with regiments from the ice world Valhalla.

After the Schola Progenium he was assigned to an artillery regiment, then to the Valhallan regiments that became his long-term home. His career was marked by accidental heroism that led to promotion after promotion. His partnership with Jurgen began early and lasted through much of his career.

Key events

  1. Served for many years with the Valhallan 597th, alongside his malodorous aide Jurgen, a psychic blank.
  2. Fought on Perlia, a world whose wars returned to haunt him decades later.
  3. Accompanied the Reclaimers Chapter in hunting the space hulk Spawn of Damnation.
  4. Fought in the 13th Black Crusade.
  5. Retired to teach at the Schola Progenium on Perlia, where he wrote memoirs that the Inquisition later sequestered.

Sandy Mitchell's novels, presented as Cain's memoirs annotated by Inquisitor Amberley Vail, follow his reluctant career. In For the Emperor, on Gravalax, he uncovers the plot behind tensions between the Imperium and the T'au. In Caves of Ice he leads the newly merged Valhallan 597th, under Colonel Regina Kasteen and Major Ruput Broklaw, into Necron tunnels beneath an ice world's mines. The Traitor's Hand takes him to Adumbria and a Slaaneshi conspiracy led by an old acquaintance. In Duty Calls, on Periremunda, Vail sends him after the rogue Inquisitor Killian. Killian was using the xenos Shadowlight to boost psykers, planning to create an army powerful enough to invade the Eye of Terror, and he was luring Tyranids with a captive Lictor to cover his escape.

Killian died because he didn't know Jurgen was a blank. He snatched the Shadowlight from Jurgen, assuming the device had been switched off, and was killed by its full power as soon as he left Jurgen's aura. His ally Metheius was killed by Gargoyles during the evacuation before Vail called in an orbital strike. In Cain's Last Stand, the Rogue Trader Orelius brought word that Warmaster Varan the Undefeatable was approaching Perlia, probably hunting the Shadowlight. Cain, by then teaching at a schola, organised militia over pictcasts, led raids on insurgents and killed Varan, but a Necron raiding party took the Shadowlight. Later novels send him with the Reclaimers Chapter to hunt the space hulk Spawn of Damnation.

Battles & campaigns

  • Desolatia (919.M41): In his first battle, his attempt to desert ran straight into a Tyranid flanking force.
  • Perlia: He crash-landed there and was declared dead, only to turn up alive.
  • Gravalax and other campaigns: He has fought Orks, Tyranids, Necrons and Chaos across a long career.

Personality

Self-deprecating, cynical and wryly funny. He claims cowardice, yet he keeps doing heroic things.

He is witty and self-deprecating, with a cynical view of the Imperium's bureaucracy. He insists he is a coward, but his actions suggest courage he refuses to admit. His loyalty to his friends, especially Jurgen and Amberley Vail, is genuine.

Weapons & Vehicles

Signature Wargear & PanoplyHero of the Imperium and Commissar of the Valhallan 597th, Ciaphas Cain eschews flashy ceremonial power weapons in favour of his trusty, battered Voskan-pattern Chainsword—with which he has parried Chaos Space Marines and Hive Tyrants—and a reliable laspistol carried by himself and Jurgen's meltagun.

Legacy

Cain is hailed as a 'Hero of the Imperium'. In his own memoirs, edited by Inquisitor Amberley Vail, he insists he is a coward who keeps stumbling into heroism while trying to save his own skin. Whether he is a self-serving survivor or a modest hero is left for the reader to decide. Cain's memoirs are a beloved comic counterpoint to the setting's grimdark tone.

Contested & retconned lore

His memoirs are an unreliable narration within the fiction, so readers are invited to doubt his self-assessment.
